Writers' Group

WOW is the recently formed West Oxfordshire Writer’s Group, meeting in Chipping Norton.

We spent our first meeting discussing what sort of group we’d all like. Amazingly, there was consensus! Details can be found on our website www.wow-group.org.uk.

We aim to be as flexible as possible with what we read, write, and talk about. Although we have a writing assignment set for each meeting, it is entirely optional. Several members have ongoing projects, so they prefer to concentrate on them.

The format is (approximately), gather at 7:30 and exchange gossip, info etc. for 30 minutes. Then we go round the table, each person reading something (again, this is entirely optional). We have a comfort break and get in more drinks at about 9:00. Then the readings continue until about 10:00.

After each reading, there is a general discussion about it, with the level of comment and constructive criticism set by the author/reader. We aim to always be sensitive and helpful, creating a ‘safe place’ to air one’s work. We are warm and friendly, with the social and fun aspects being an important facet of the group.

We meet on the first and third Thursdays of each month.

Our website currently includes our diary (showing the assignments), and a forum for members where we can share information. The forum also includes a couple of ‘collaborative’ story lines - members are encouraged to “add the next few lines” to the stories.

There are no subscriptions or fees as we don’t currently have to pay for our venue. The Chequers Inn only asks that we buy a couple of drinks (usual pub drinks plus coffee) each meeting.
